How was my experience photographing a six week old baby? | Newborn Photography Milton

Have I done a newborn photoshoot for babies above 2 -3 weeks? yes, I have and I recently did a newborn photoshoot for a baby who was a little over 6 weeks old. To know more about what was my workflow and how was my experience photographing a six-week-old baby, what I call an older newborn read below.

A few weeks ago I was contacted by a client who was looking for newborn photography in Milton but somehow found me on one of the Facebook groups and loved my newborn photography style. This client contacted me for a newborn photoshoot for her baby who was almost 6 weeks old at that time. To be honest I was a little apprehensive to book this client. Photographing older babies is challenging. Older babies are more alert and awake for longer unlike most babies 2 -3 weeks who just wake up for feeding and fall asleep quickly.

Dream Client

Anyways I decided to book them as soon as I could schedule them and I am glad I did. I should mention my experience with this client was amazing. I am impressed with how much they valued newborn photography. So much so that they travelled an hour with a newborn baby to come to me to capture beautiful images of their daughter. I am thankful that they chose me for their daughter’s photoshoot and very happy with the way the photo shoot went. The parents were also happy with the images in their gallery. This little girl had the most beautiful gallery I have had for babies this old, it was so good that parents ended up buying my highest package.

Awake poses

When the baby arrived she was awake, obviously because she had a good nap on her way to the studio. Since she was making eye contact and smiling I decided to start with a few awake shots. One thing I absolutely love about photographing older newborns is awake shots as they make all these cute faces, eye contact and smile a lot. I as well as all parents love those shots. Tips to achieve variety

Most babies fall asleep when wrapped and so I started wrapping her expecting she will fall asleep and she did. Since I knew she won’t be sleeping for long I kept switching her from in props pose to posing bed poses while keeping the wrap the same or just changing a little bit to have a variety in her gallery.

I did a potato wrap in a dusty rose colour and posed her on the posing bed, then I replaced her bonnet with a headband. Then I just added a flower knot on the same potato wrap and posed her in the basket. Check the images below so you have an idea of what I could capture by just changing a few elements in her setup.

Then I changed her into a different style of wrap called toes out wrap in white colour and posed her again on the posing bed. Then I used another wrap in yellow colour over the same existing white wrap and posed her on a bed prop with a beautiful yellow setup. Check the images below.

then removed the yellow wrap and did another style of wrap called the twist knot wrap over the existing white wrap and posed her in a moon prop. I was purposely just doing different wraps over the existing white wrap so as to not disturb the baby and wake up by removing the entire wrap and doing another one. Check the image below in the moon prop with twist knot wrap.

By this time I had got enough variety for the gallery but since she was still sleeping after removing the wrap I put her in an outfit and posed her in a heart bowl. I was able to take a few shots in the heart bowl and she woke up. She was awake but not fussy so I decided to do a few more awake shots using a pink backdrop which mom mentioned she loved when she initially walked came in for the photo shoot. I was able to get some really go shots in that too check below.
