Dressing Up For Special Memories: Parents' Guide | Kitchener Newborn Photographer

Having a newborn photoshoot is a wonderful way to capture the beauty of your baby and create memories that will last a lifetime. Kitchener’s newborn photographer, Memory Frames Studio believes that one important factor for taking perfect newborn photos is choosing what the family will wear. After all, the photos taken during this time will be cherished for generations to come. Hence, it’s essential that you dress and look your best. Choosing the right outfits for both mom, dad and siblings can be tricky. Here we will discuss some tips to help you decide on the best attire for your newborn photoshoot.

Clothing Considerations

We believe family portraits with your newborn are precious because you get to capture that bond with your newborn. Usually, if you choose a newborn package which includes family portraits, the photographer will have a time slot for taking family photographs.

If you are hiring a professional newborn photographer to take solo newborn posed photos and family portraits, it takes anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hrs for the entire photoshoot. Usually, around 30 -45 minutes will be spent on family portraits. It is vital to discuss with your photographer about the order in which they will take newborn and family portraits. If the photographer plans on taking the family portraits prior to newborn photos, it will be convenient to arrive dressed up for family portraits. However, if the family portraits are scheduled at the end of the session, changing in the studio will help keep those clothes clean and fresh, remember accidents are common with newborns!  If you have younger siblings who will accompany you for the family portraits it will be best to dress them in the studio changing room. Also, the temperature at newborn studios is set to keep the infant comfortable while posing. The temperature that would be comfortable for your newborn, will definitely be too warm for you. Hence, dressing up in lighter more comfortable clothing will be helpful. Discussing all these options with your photographer beforehand will give you a definite idea of whether you should dress up for the family portrait from home or in the studio.

When it comes to newborn photoshoots, parents should be mindful of the outfits they choose to wear. Avoid anything with big logos, and busy prints, like checkered shirts that can look distracting and could take away the focus from your newborn baby in your family portraits.  Avoid neon colours, as they tend to create colour cast on skin. It is especially important to wear clothes you feel comfortable and confident in. Avoid fabrics that are shiny like leather, sequin etc. because they will create glare in photographs. Do not go for loud colours that are trending at the time of your photoshoot, if you do so, you will cringe a few years later, when you look back at those pictures.

Start by considering neutral colours that won’t distract from your little one’s cuteness. Black, white, cream and grey are most popular with my clients for family photoshoots. If you want a little colour in your portraits, consider Olive, light brown, maroon, and navy blue. Use these solid colours on shirts or blouses and pair them with cream, beige, white or black bottoms or pants. A simple solid colour t-shirt, shirt, blouse and dress are the most popular and safe choices among our clients. Instead of prints choose textured fabrics such as a knitted sweater. Unlike popular belief, you do not need to wear matching colours, you can go with colours that complement each other. Below are some examples of complementing colours created by Memory Frames Studio, Kitchener’s newborn photographer.

Hair & Makeup Tips

Along with choosing the right outfits, make-up and hair styling are equally essential elements for creating perfect family images. Doing so will bring together your entire look and enhance your family photographs. If you are wearing any hair accessories ensure that it matches or complements the colours of your outfit. Avoid wearing products on your skin and face that will make your hair or face look oily and greasy, for example, hair oil, greasy moisturizers etc. We highly recommend going to a professional makeup artist and hairstylist. Professional makeup artists understand the importance of photography lighting, angles and poses, they know how to use makeup to optimize results in photos, and have products that make you look flawless in pictures. Having your hair done professionally also helps create a polished look that makes the person in the photograph appear more put together. If you are doing your own hair we suggest straightening or curling your hair depending on what suits you best. When it comes to hair and makeup, do not try out something new on the day of your photoshoot, go for your usual simple makeup and hair look, that you are used to.

Selecting the right clothing for your family photoshoot can be a fun and rewarding task. Having a clear vision of what you’d like to achieve, based on that selecting colours, styles, and textures that complement each other can help create a memorable experience. Investing a little time in hair, and makeup and choosing the right attire for each person in the photo will pay off with beautiful memories that last a lifetime.
